Depression, as we know, effects both men and women. If you think about it, depression is very focused on self. In the professional counseling community, it is widely believed that one of the major objectives to treating depression is to increase one’s self-esteem.  I believe this is one of the reasons many people do not find lasting change.  People are taught to look back at themselves for the source of healing. We need to prayerfully beseech the Lord to bring us away from ourselves, as He draws us towards Himself.  We need to go through what I call “identity training”. We need to have a deep understanding of who Christ is, a Christ-esteem, with our eyes focused on Him, and who we are in Him.  The last thing we need is a focus on self.

Ed Welch, a well known Biblical Counselor and Author rightly labeled depression as a “stubborn darkness”. Depression is a dark reality for many people.  One that is full of sadness, hopelessness, and despair; one that grips them.  As sinners, life apart from Jesus Christ is very depressing.  However, as Christians, the Light of the Gospel has broken into our darkness, exposing and healing our hearts of stone, turning them into hearts of flesh.  Therefore, we have true freedom in Christ to walk out of that darkness, not with hearts full of despair, but with hearts full of hope (Romans 5:1-10).

An important discussion in Biblical Counseling is the primacy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its present day application in our lives.  Many people view Christ’s death and resurrection only as a historic event.  Though it was a historic event, it is important that the Christian understand the impact of Christ’s work in our hearts today.  We must refocus our understanding, prayerfully asking God to move our hearts and mind to be in line with the truth of His Word, the truth of us as his creation, and the truth of Jesus Christ and how His work on the Cross gives us freedom to make lasting life change.  Step into the studio and listen to the discussion.

Is there a need for Biblical Counseling? Isn’t there enough “counsel” in society as it is? There is a desperate need not for more counsel, but different counsel. Counsel that doesn’t point people back to themselves as a source of healing, but rather guides them to the person that is the source of true and lasting healing, Jesus Christ.  This guiding is done through the Bible and the work of the Holy Spirit, not pop-psychology.  So welcome to the studio and Part 1 of the introduction of this different and important counsel.
